Dressing of resin bonded diamond wheels on modern CNC cylindrical grinding machines
Modern CNC cylindrical grinding machines feature high frequency controlled spindle drives which can be used at low rpm. The main wheel drive with the diamond grinding wheel is set at a surface speed of 2 mls (400 sfpm). A silicon carbide wheel is mounted onto a mandrei and fixed between the centres of the workpiece drive and the tailstock. Using a reciprocating mode, the diamond grinding wheel is being "ground" at low depths of cut. The silicon carbide wheel overtravels the diamond wheel on each side by half its own wheel width.
Specification of the silicon carbide wheel: 11 C60 H6V, Ø 200 x 25 (8 x 1 inch) Specification of diamond wheel: 064 to 0181 in resin bond

Dressing with rotary diamond tools Straight wheel types can be relatively easily dressing with sintered diamond roller dressers. When dealing with more complex profiles, the wear on the diamond roller dresser cannot be neglected and accuracy will be questionable. |
