The overlap ratio indicates how often one point on the grinding wheel periphery is covered by the effective width bd of the dressing tool at a given number of wheel revolutions. The more often this happens, the higher the overlap ratio and the finer dressed the grinding wheel surface will become. An overlap ratio of 4 means, therefore, that the dressing tool has moved axially across the wheel's periphery by its own width in four grinding wheel revolutions.
