Speed ratio qs
As for internal cylindrical grinding, the speed ratio between OD grinding wheel and workpiece is of paramount importance and should established correctly for any cylindrical grinding process. For example::
Wheel peripheral speed:  vc   50 m/s
Workpiece diameter: dw 40 mm
Workpiece RPM: nw     400 RPM.
Workpiece peripheral speed:   vw 50'260 mm/min
(400 RPM* Æ 40 mm* p)
qs =  Wheel peripheral speed vc * 1000 * 60
/ Workpiece peripheral speed


qs =  50 (m/s) * 1000 * 60
/ 50'260 (mm/min)


qs = 60


Aim for the following values: Rough grinding: 60 to 80
Finish grinding: 80 - 120


qs < 50: danger of chatter marks
qs > 120: danger of burning


Guidelines for plunge grinding infeed rates:
Speed of plunging:     vf    
0.35 - 1.5 mm/min (0.014 - 0.05 in./min)
(conventional machines)
0.5 - 2.5 mm/min (0.018 – 0.1 in./min)
CNC machines


For some machines the input may be in mm per revolution of the workpiece:
Rule of thumb:          
   
ae   0.003 - 0.015 mm per rev.
(0.00012 – 0.0006 in./rev.)
